Professional Cleanings

The single most effective thing you can do for your long-term oral health — and it takes less than an hour.

Professional dental cleanings at Hunt Dentistry Brampton

Even the most diligent brushers and flossers miss areas where plaque hardens into calculus (tartar) — a cement-like deposit that only professional instruments can remove. A professional cleaning at Hunt Dentistry is the foundation of a preventive dental routine, and it's far more than just polishing your teeth.

01

What Happens During a Cleaning

Our registered dental hygienists use ultrasonic scalers and fine hand instruments to gently remove calculus from above and below the gumline, clear biofilm from between teeth, and polish away surface staining. The appointment ends with a fluoride treatment for added protection against decay.

02

Scaling vs. Root Planing

A standard prophylaxis cleaning removes deposits above and just below the gumline. If gum disease has progressed, we may recommend a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing (also called deep cleaning), which targets deposits deeper in the gum pockets and smooths the root surfaces to prevent bacteria from reattaching.

03

Why Regular Cleanings Matter

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and it's largely preventable. Regular cleanings halt the cycle of bacterial accumulation, inflammation, and bone loss. They also give us an opportunity to spot early decay and other changes before they require costly treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need a cleaning?

Most adults benefit from a cleaning every 6 months. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy calculus buildup, or conditions like diabetes may need cleanings every 3 to 4 months.

Will my teeth be sensitive after?

Some mild sensitivity is normal for 24–48 hours after a cleaning, especially if it's been a while. This settles quickly. If you experience significant discomfort, let us know.

Can I eat right after?

Yes, unless you've had a fluoride treatment — in that case we ask you to wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
