Oral Cancer Screening
Early detection saves lives. A two-minute exam at every checkup could make all the difference.

About This Service
Oral cancer is one of the most survivable cancers when caught early — but one of the most deadly when it isn't. Over 5,000 Canadians are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, and the 5-year survival rate jumps from under 30% to over 80% when detected in its earliest stages. That's why we screen every patient at every checkup.
What We Look For
An oral cancer screening involves a thorough visual and tactile examination of the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, roof of the mouth, cheeks, throat, and lymph nodes in the neck. We're looking for any abnormalities — red or white patches, unusual lumps, sores that don't heal, or changes in tissue texture. Most findings are benign, but any suspicious area warrants a follow-up or referral.
Risk Factors
Tobacco use (including vaping), heavy alcohol consumption, and HPV infection (particularly HPV-16) are the leading risk factors for oral cancer. However, roughly 25% of oral cancer patients have none of these risk factors. That's why routine screening is important for everyone — not just high-risk individuals.
What Happens If Something Is Found
If we identify a concerning area, we'll discuss it with you calmly and clearly. We may recommend monitoring it over a few weeks, or refer you to an oral surgeon or specialist for a biopsy. Finding an abnormality doesn't mean you have cancer — many lesions are entirely benign — but it does mean we take it seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the screening painful?
Not at all. The screening takes about 2 minutes and involves gentle palpation of your neck and visual inspection of all soft tissue in your mouth.
How often should I be screened?
At least once per year for all adults. More frequently for those with known risk factors.
What if I have a sore that won't heal?
Any sore in your mouth that doesn't heal within 2 weeks should be evaluated immediately. Don't wait for your next scheduled appointment — call us and we'll see you promptly.
