Sealants & Fluoride
Two of the most effective tools in preventive dentistry — protecting your child's teeth before problems start.

The Most Powerful Preventive Tools Available for Children's Teeth
Dental sealants and fluoride treatments are the most powerful preventive tools available for children's teeth. Together, they dramatically reduce the risk of cavities — the most common chronic childhood disease. Both treatments are quick, painless, and provide years of protection.
How Dental Sealants Work
The chewing surfaces of back teeth are covered in deep pits and grooves where food and bacteria accumulate — and where toothbrush bristles can't reach. A sealant is a thin, protective coating painted onto these surfaces that physically blocks bacteria and food from settling in. Sealants are most commonly applied to the first and second permanent molars as they erupt.
The Sealant Application Process
Applying sealants is quick and completely painless — no needles, no drilling. The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild acid gel is applied briefly to help the sealant bond, the tooth is rinsed and dried again, and the liquid sealant is painted on and hardened with a blue light. The whole process takes about a minute per tooth.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel by remineralising areas weakened by acid and making enamel more resistant to future acid attacks. Professional fluoride varnish is applied at the end of each cleaning appointment and contains a much higher concentration of fluoride than toothpaste. It dries on contact and stays on the teeth for several hours, releasing fluoride gradually.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should sealants be applied?
The first permanent molars typically erupt around age 6, and the second molars around age 12. Sealants are ideally applied as soon as these teeth are fully erupted.
How long do sealants last?
Sealants can last 5–10 years with proper care. We check them at every appointment and reapply if they've worn or chipped.
Is fluoride safe for children?
Yes — fluoride has been used safely for decades and is endorsed by every major dental and medical organisation. The amount applied in a professional varnish is small and well within safe limits.
