Cavity Treatment
Treating cavities in children gently, efficiently, and without fear — so they leave with a positive experience.

Treating Childhood Cavities Before They Become a Bigger Problem
Cavities in children are extremely common — early childhood caries (tooth decay) affects nearly a third of Canadian children under age 6. Untreated decay doesn't resolve on its own; it progresses, causes pain, affects eating and speech, and can impact the developing permanent teeth. Early, gentle treatment is always the better path.
Tooth-Coloured Fillings for Children
For small to moderate cavities, we use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings. These bond directly to the tooth structure, restore full function, and look completely natural. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia — we use topical numbing gel first so the injection is virtually painless — and most children are surprised by how quick and easy it is.
Stainless Steel Crowns
For larger cavities in baby molars, or teeth that have had a pulpotomy, a stainless steel crown (SSC) is often the most durable option. SSCs fit over the entire tooth and are virtually indestructible — they last until the baby tooth naturally falls out. They're placed in a single appointment and are a highly cost-effective restoration for back teeth.
Pulp Therapy (Pulpotomy)
When decay reaches the inner pulp of a baby tooth, we perform a pulpotomy (sometimes called a baby root canal). The infected portion of the pulp is removed, a medicated filling is placed to protect the remaining healthy pulp, and a crown is placed to seal the tooth. This saves the tooth and avoids premature extraction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should baby teeth even be filled if they'll fall out anyway?
Yes. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, support speech and eating, and can cause significant pain and infection if left untreated. Premature loss due to untreated decay can lead to orthodontic problems.
How do I help my anxious child before treatment?
Stay positive and matter-of-fact. Avoid over-explaining or using scary words. Our team is experienced with anxious children and uses proven distraction and communication techniques.
Is laughing gas (nitrous oxide) available?
Yes — nitrous oxide sedation is available for children who are anxious or have difficulty sitting still. It's safe, mild, and wears off within minutes of the end of treatment.
Ready to Get Started?
Same-day appointments are available for children in pain. Our Brampton team treats cavities gently — most kids are back to school the same afternoon.
