Retention & Retainers
Protect the smile you worked for — retainers are the final, essential step in every orthodontic journey.

Why Retainers Are Non-Negotiable After Treatment
Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original positions after orthodontic treatment — a phenomenon called relapse. Retainers are what prevent this. Without retention, the results of months or years of orthodontic treatment can gradually undo themselves. Proper retainer wear is non-negotiable after braces or Invisalign.
Types of Retainers
Removable Hawley retainers use a wire that rests against the front teeth, anchored by an acrylic plate. Essix (clear) retainers look like thin Invisalign aligners and are nearly invisible. Fixed (bonded) retainers are thin wires bonded to the back of the front teeth — you can't remove them, and you don't have to remember to wear them.
How Long Do You Wear a Retainer?
The honest answer is: indefinitely. Teeth continue to shift throughout life regardless of orthodontic treatment. Most patients wear removable retainers every night long-term. Fixed retainers can remain in place for many years. The investment in retention protects the far larger investment you made in straightening your teeth.
Replacing or Repairing Retainers
Clear retainers typically need replacement every 1–3 years with regular wear. Hawley retainers can last longer with proper care. If your retainer breaks, loses its fit, or is lost, contact us promptly — even a short gap in retention can allow teeth to shift. We can fabricate a new retainer quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I lost my retainer?
Contact us as soon as possible. We'll take a new scan or impression and fabricate a replacement. The sooner you do this, the less likely your teeth will have shifted.
How do I clean my retainer?
Rinse your retainer with cool water after each use. Gently brush it with a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material.
Do I need a retainer if I had Invisalign?
Absolutely. The last Invisalign aligner is sometimes used as a temporary retainer, but a proper long-term retainer should be made after treatment is complete.
